Won in a design competition, Wendell Park Primary is an original School Board Building in the Ravenscourt and Starch Green Conservation area, the first Victorain wing being completed in 1901, and the second wing completed in a different style in the 1950s.
Suffering from a lack of investment and ad hoc extensions over the years, the main entrance, office areas and external areas are in need of re-organising, refurbishment and extension.
Our scheme consists of an entire new wrap-around playground, entrance approach, new canopies to provide covered external play and outside learing decks, and new entrance area and school offices.
In order to tie together the 2 different building styles we have developed a language for the canopies that bridges the gap between the austerity of the existing buildings and the childrens realm of the playground. Both of the canopies are concieved as separate modern elements, detatched from the building. The height of each canopy, rythm of the columns and proportion of the spacings specifically relate to the proportion of the building to which the canopy relates.
