West Sussex House

Main Project Info

Ongoing design for a zero carbon house in a rural setting.

The central pitched roofed, brick and flint part of the house contains the living spaces, with bedrooms and snug spaces articulated as separate, low slung blackened timber annexes. These are heated only when used, thus concentrating energy use on regularly used spaces.

This intelligent scheme is sensitive to it’s rural context, respectful of it’s site history but anashamedly modern.

The central living space masquerades as a traditional, rural building, with dramatic slots cut into it’s sides, drawing the landscape inside. Windows are triple glazed and the fabric is super insulated.

Energy is created on site using a coppice rotation system feeding a biomass boiler.
